Did Your Lawn Survive Halloween?

Fall lawn care after Halloween

Yeah, I made that.

I love Halloween.  In fact, it might be my favorite “holiday”.  Trick-or-treaters are simply adorable, but they can wreak havoc on your grass – lots of little feet scurrying across the lawn to the next candy injection can add up to soil compaction.  If the ground is not yet frozen where you live, you still have time to repair the damage.

The first step is to remove any dead leaves from your lawn.  You can rake or mulch leaves, but you have to do something with them to avoid snow mold and other potential problems.  After you have removed the leaves, follow these three steps:

  1. Aerate the soil.  If you have ever read this blog, you know I’m a big advocate of liquid aerator products because they are easy to apply and very effective.  However, if the ground has already frozen, wait until spring.  (If you have been wanting to try liquid aerator, now is the time, GreenerGreenGrass is having a big sale, but only for a limited time).
  2. Re-seed bare patches.  This only applies to areas where it is still relatively warm, but you can effectively re-seed bare spots in fall and have a healthy lawn in spring.  Even if you live in a temperate area, you can use cool-season grass seed.
  3. Apply a root stimulator.  If you do re-seed, or even if you just have thin grass areas that you would like to thicken up, you can use a natural root  stimulator to increase root mass and strengthen your lawn.  You can do this any time of year, but you are more likely to notice weak spots not that your lawn has been attacked by tiny Halloween goblins.

If it’s too late in the season to treat your lawn, enjoy the snow!
